Flower Care
A little care goes a long way once your bouquet makes it home.
We provide a flower food packet with every bouquet. Be sure to add it to clean water when you first arrange your flowers. Our flowers are picked in order to provide the longest vase life possible, but some varieties naturally last longer than others. As individual stems begin to wilt, simply remove them and continue enjoying the rest of the bouquet. This is especially true for one of our favorites, dahlias, which typically last about five days.
When you get your flowers home
As soon as you can, unwrap your bouquet and trim the stems. Cut about one inch off the bottom of each stem at a slight angle using clean, sharp scissors. This helps the flowers take up water more easily.
Choose a clean vase
Always start with a clean vase. A small amount of residue or bacteria can shorten the life of your flowers. Fill the vase with fresh water and add the flower food provided.
Remove any leaves below the water line
Strip away any foliage that would sit below the water line once the flowers are arranged. Leaves in the water break down quickly and can cause bacteria to grow.
Water matters
Change the water every one to two days. If possible, rinse the vase each time and trim the stems to keep them drinking well.
Location matters
Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources, and away from ripening fruit. Heat and ethylene gas from fruit can shorten vase life.
Different flowers, different personalities
Some flowers are thirstier or more delicate than others. If you notice drooping, try a fresh cut and fresh water first. Many flowers will perk right back up within a few hours.
When it’s time to let them go
Flowers are fleeting by nature, and that’s part of their beauty. When your blooms reach the end of their vase life, they can be composted and returned to the soil, closing the loop back to the farm.
